: Speech enabling our website
As part of our continuous website improvements and efforts to make it 'Accessible to All' we are pleased to announce that our website is now speech-enabled with 'Free to download' software. This will allow you to listen to our website rather than having to read it.
This latest improvement will help those with reading difficulties, literacy problems, dyslexia, mild vision difficulties and where English is not their first language - thereby improving accessibility of information to a greater percentage of the population.
Our website can be speech enabled by you on demand using the free Browsealoud software which is available for Windows PC's using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape or Mozilla browsers. Your PC will also need speakers and a sound card to allow you to use this speech facility.
Click on the Browsealoud button below to reach the download site and then follow the instructions and prompts to download and install the program. Download and installation of Browsealoud will take around 10-15 minutes on a standard modem.

When
Browsealoud is installed you will see a 'blue concentric circles icon' in
the system tray at the bottom right hand corner of your screen to tell you
that Browsealoud is loaded and ready on your computer. Then when you roll
your mouse over some text within our website the words will be instantly
turned into speech.
More information, and details of how to customise and fine tune the software to your individual requirements, can be found on the Browsealoud website : http://www.browsealoud.com/page.asp?pg_id=70011
Browsealoud should also read text in Adobe .PDF files attached to our website if you have either Adobe Reader version 6 or 7 (or higher) or Adobe Acrobat (full version) version 6 or 7 (or higher) installed on your PC (but it will ignore images even if they contain text). (Click here to find out more about Adobe products).
If you find that Browsealoud stops reading out our website on your PC then please try updating Browsealoud. (If Browsealoud is running on your PC, double click in the 'blue concentric circles logo' in your system tray (bottom right), then go to the 'About' tab and click on the 'Update' button - then shut down Browsealoud and start it up again on your PC. Please let us know if Browsealoud stops working on your PC and what operating system you are using (eg Windows 98 or XP etc).
