Beach safety : Swimming beaches
Four bathing beaches have been introduced following consultations with beach users, interest groups and those with formal responsibilities for our beaches. A report was taken to Community Services Committee on 16 December 2003 and councillors resolved to move forward with the project :
The result is that from the beginning of May to the end of October inclusive,
four swimming beaches with associated signage have been designated, as shown
on the attached plans below :
(you can enlarge the maps for more detail using the zoom
features of Adobe Acrobat)

Lancing : Worthing / Lancing boundary (Western Road) to Widewater lagoon
Widewater : Widewater lagoon to Beach Road, Shoreham Beach
Shoreham : Beach Road, Shoreham Beach to Kingston Beach / Shoreham Harbour entrance
Southwick : Kingston Beach / Shoreham Harbour entrance to Southwick / Portslade boundary
The
bathing areas have been marked off with red buoys and large signs (two way)
prominently placed either end of the designated areas informing visitors
that all watercraft, wind powered or motor, are excluded from these areas.
The yellow buoys, marking the 200m line, have been installed to signify the
8 knot limit.
Further new signage will be installed for the 2007 bathing season, which will be sited at popular pedestrian access points to the beaches. This will contain the usual do's and don'ts, emergency numbers, nearest car parks, toilets etc as well as a map showing the bathing beaches.
If you wish to discuss matters relating to beach and foreshore please send Adur Watch an e-mail.

Shoreham Beach
Vegetated
shingle is an internationally rare habitat that contains such plants as Yellow
Horned Poppy, Sea Kale and Curled Dock.
These plants encourage a wealth of wildlife to the beach. This is why the area has been made a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
To find out more about vegetated shingle see the related external links on this page.
To find out more about the LNR see :
Shoreham Beach is a popular location for kite surfing - for more details see Kite surfing in the Sports Directory.

Dogs on beaches / Dog free beaches
The Adur District has no dog free beaches or time controlled zones. This means that dogs are allowed on all beaches at all times of the year. However, dogs that are taken onto our beaches must be kept under strict control at all times and their owners, or the people who are in charge of the dogs, are required to thoroughly clean up after them and to use the dog bins provided.

- Shoreham Beach :
You may not barbecue on Shoreham Beach. It is a Local Nature Reserve and contains rare plants. Please respect this area. - Lancing beaches :
The beaches at Lancing are controlled by Lancing Parish Council and you must seek permission from them if you intend to use those beaches.

You may barbecue on any other beach within Worthing.
Please do not bring any glass on to our beaches (eg bottles, glasses, food containers or bowls, etc) - if it breaks it is difficult to pick up and is therefore a hazard.
Do :
- only light barbecues after 6pm
- contain barbecues in a metal tray
- raise barbecues above the pebbles to prevent them getting hot and burning people once you have left the beach
- douse the barbecue with cold water once you have finished to ensure the fire is out and the coals are cold
- dispose of your litter by taking it home with you or using the bins provided near to beaches when you leave - any food remains should be well wrapped before being placed in a bin
- Use the designated barbeque stands at Goring
Do not :
- light a fire - this is extremely dangerous to other beach users and has caused serious injuries in the past
- cover up hot stones with cold ones - cold stones shatter when they warm up and can cause injury
- leave your litter behind
- bring any glass on to our beaches (eg bottles, glasses, food containers or bowls, etc) - if it breaks it is difficult to pick up and is therefore a hazard
- play amplified music
- have more than 20 people (if you are planning a gathering of more than twenty people you will need permission and need to fill out an events application form)
